Vinyl is Culture.

Lets fight against excessive vinyl taxation

Vinyl imports are taxed with more than 60% import taxes, plus ICMS sales taxes (18% in SP) with taxes charged over the price of vinyl, shipping charges, plus an extra US $ 10.00 on custom taxes, which is impossible for anyone to afford.

All these taxes are applied in US dollars and Sterling pounds, and taxes are converted on the day of payment. An "up-to-date" DJ purchases an average of 20 records per month. The issue is that vinyl is not a superfluous product.

"Vinyl is culture", and it has been written on all vinyl produced in Brazil since the early days (in pre-CD's era).

Besides vinyl, books are another example of cultural material, but it has no taxation crisis. Vinyl is a DJ's work material, and electronic music globalizes its definition as well as its culture. Worldwide recognition of the electronic music scene has made a great impact on Brazil's culture, where music is exported and influenced producers from various countries. With the lack of vinyl availability there can be no DJ or club culture. Therefore, the most important argument is to reduce taxes since there isn't a similar national product that supports the demand in the market of professional DJs.

Today, only DJs utilize vinyl, which does not affect record labels that distribute their music on CD's or even affect the prescription of Estate and Federal tax.

With the currency in crisis, it's clear that fees must be applied and increased, although none of the clubs will be able to compensate because vinyl prices have been raised excessively. Club owners spend most of their resources on international guests, high priced airline tickets, both domestic and international. Raising prices on club admittance would drive away the massive public.

Let's gather our strength. It's time to organize a broad NATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST EXCESSIVE VINYL TAXATION. In this campaign we will be defending our job market in all aspects of employment and taxes collected by the club culture (entertainment and tourism) for the government, especially in defense of the Music as Culture.

Disc Jockeys of all genres who use vinyl in this line of work (DJ's who play house, trance, progressive, drum'n'bass, electro, rock, hip hop, rap, soul, R&B, pop, dance, commercial, etc.), electronic music scene websites, alternative culture, clubs, talent agencies, specialized magazines and newspapers, internet message boards, party info, especially club goers, we will be in this fight organizing this campaign, taking it to Executive branches and Legislators, and especially to those who were elected, to launch a defense for our culture, against the abusive taxes on vinyl, analyzing the tributary legislation, until if necessary, to capture the context for a tributary reform so necessary in our country.

Music is very important in our lives.
